چکیده
Schistosomiasis is one of the fifteen neglected tropical diseases (NTDS) namely: schistosomiasis, ascariasis, buruli ulcer, chagas disease, cysticercosis, food borne trematodiases, hookworm dis‐ ease, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, trichuriasis, leishmaniasis, guinea worm, trypano‐ somiasis and oncocerciasis. It is a resurgent disease and Schistosoma sp. Infects well over 250 million people worldwide beside livestock [1]. Schistosomiasis (also called Bilharzias after the German tropical disease specialist, Theodore M. Bilharz, 1829 – 1862) is second only to malaria in parasitic disease morbidity. Despite control programmes in place, the distribution and the num‐ ber of people estimated to be infected or at risks have not reduced. Approximately, over 600 mil‐ lion people in tropical and subtropical countries are at risk and of those infected120 million are symptomatic with 20 million having severe manifestations. Schistosomiasis is endemic in many countries, not only in sub-Saharan Africa, but the Middle East, Far East, South and Central Amer‐ ica and the Caribbean. It is endemic in about 76 countries of the world including Nigeria. Present‐ ly, an estimated 3 million Nigerian children aged between 5 and 14 years are infected.

[Ecoepidemiology of urban schistosomiasis in Itamaracá Island, Pernambuco, Brazil].
INTRODUCTION In 1988, 22 autochthonous cases from accidental exposure were registered in Forte Orange beach, Itamaracá Island, Pernambuco, Brazil. All cases occurred in middle-to-upper class individuals who were vacationing in the island. After the cases were identified, the major objective was to find breeding sites of schistosomiasis vectors and correlate the biological factors with the envir...
متن کاملUrban schistosomiasis in Itamaracá Island, Pernambuco, Brazil: epidemiological factors involved in the recent endemic process.
Schistosomiasis has been considered as a rural endemic disease. In the State of Pernambuco, migratory human movements from endemic areas to urban ones with precarious sanitary and environmental conditions, is being pointed out as responsible for expansion and transmission of schistosomiasis (CS Barbosa et al. 1996 Rev Saúde Pública 14: 693-700). The possibility that schistosomiasis mansoni coul...
متن کاملEvaluation of Incidence Rate and some of Epidemiological Indices of Human Brucellosis in Qazvin Province, Iran during 2002 to 2009
Background: The socio-economical and geographical conditions of Iran cause most of the people consume dairy products or are in close contact with livestock, that these expose many individuals to Brucella spp. Since Qazvin province is considered as a moderate burden of brucellosis, the need for a comprehensive epidemiological study of the disease in this province is quite essential. Methods: Th...
متن کاملCurrent epidemiological status of schistosomiasis in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.
Uncontrolled peripheral urbanisation coupled with environmental degradation has affected the status of schistosomiasis in Pernambuco (PE), Brazil. This endemic disease continues to perpetuate its transmission in rural areas and has also become a cause for concern in coastal towns of the state. The lack of basic infrastructure (sanitation and health programmes) to support the new urban areas lea...
متن کاملRapid mapping of schistosomiasis and other neglected tropical diseases in the context of integrated control programmes in Africa.
There is growing interest and commitment to the control of schistosomiasis and other so-called neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Resources for control are inevitably limited, necessitating assessment methods that can rapidly and accurately identify and map high-risk communities so that interventions can be targeted in a spatially-explicit and cost-effective manner. Here, we review progress ma...
